Gemma Carr

Professional Photographerself-portrait

Hey, you found me! Welcome to my website and thanks for stopping by. I am Gemma, I love to take photos.

I always knew I was destined to carve out a career in a creative field. So, when photography found me, there was no looking back! 13 years on, I am continuing to enjoy, develop and be amazed by what I am fortunate enough to call "my job".

Here are a few questions that are commonly asked of me:

What made you become a photographer? originally I thought I would be an architect, or perhaps a writer, painter or cartoonist. Yet it was when I had free reign on an SLR camera at high school that a new world of artistry arrived for me. My 11th grade photography teacher entered my images in numerous competitions and to my surprise, each time I won! From this point onwards, I set my sights on becoming a photographer.

What is your favorite thing to photograph? This is always a tricky one, as above all I enjoy the diversity of ever changing subject matter. I must confess I have a rather soft spot for photographing food (plus eating it) and macro photography has always sparked my interest. Yet, I am always amazed at how much I enjoy getting the best shot out of something mundane. So, in summary, there are elements of each subject matter that are wonderful for me. I love the fast and unpredictable pace of shooting a wedding, the subtle textures & colours of still life/food and getting to know the person behind the face for portraiture.

How would you describe your style of photography? Very natural. I generally shoot on the fly. My shots tend to have a touch of editorial flavor and produce a clean, true-to-life result. I like strong composition and not too many competing elements within each shot.

How do you know when you have a "winning" shot? I can never quite anticipate when they are coming, or what the formula is but boy, when it happens it's pure joy. That's what keeps the fire in my belly, awaiting the next winning shot. As a matter of fact, I think I am due for one anytime now.

What's the best thing about being a photographer? Leaving home for work each day and returning home with my images that didn't exist just hours prior. I enjoy being part of the creative process and hopefully meeting some interesting people along the way.

So, are you Canon or Nikon? Canon. Have been right from the start. Not sure how I would survive without Rick and the CPS team!
